The Dovercourt Boys and Girls Club (DBGC) is a not-for-profit organization that provides after school, summer, winter and March Break programs for over 1,000 children and youth at two locations in Toronto’s west end (Dovercourt Village: situated north of Bloor Street between Christie Street to the east, the CPR railway lines to the north and Dufferin Street to the west, and Junction Triangle: located in West Toronto, roughly in the area of Bloor Street, Dupont Street, Lansdowne Avenue, and Dundas Street West.)

The Club’s mission is to provide a safe, supportive place where children and youth experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills for life.

Role Descriptions

Position: Summer Camp Counsellor

Location: Dovercourt Clubhouse or Junction Triangle Clubhouse (and nearby TDSB and TCDSB schools)

Nature and Scope: The position is responsible for ensuring safety and providing care for children and youth as well as planning and implementing educational and recreational programs to facilitate learning and achieve developmental goals of children throughout the summer.

Hours: Variety of shifts between operating hours of 7:30am-6:00pm (Monday to Friday)

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Develop activities and implement programs that nurtures the physical, intellectual, social and emotional development of children ages 4-14 years old
  • Help plan and implement programs that meet mandatory objectives, including; physical education, recreation and leisure, nutrition, healthy eating and wellness
  • Establish appropriate environments by ensuring safe, clean and sanitary play areas
  • Establish rapport with parents, inform of children’s progress, and encourage active involvement on a daily basis 
  • Role model leadership skills through enthusiastic and positive interactions with children, volunteers and staff 
  • Participate in staff meetings
  • Supervise campers during field trips and Club outings, when required
  • Assist in daily program set up and clean up 
  • Wear weather appropriate attire, including Club issued t-shirt
  • Mandatory attendance at staff training (June 25th –June 29th 9am-5pm)


  • Graduate of, or currently enrolled in a post-secondary child and youth care, recreation and leisure services, social work, early childhood education, education or related program 
  • Experience working with children and youth 
  • After School Program/Camp planning and facilitation experience
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR
  • Clear vulnerable sector police record check is required

Specialty Programs 

DBGC will be offering the following programs throughout the summer, which require additional qualifications of its staff: 

Master Chef: Focus on creating, cooking, and baking healthy recipes from a variety of different ethnic cuisines.

  • Looking for staff with interest, passion, education and/or experience in nutrition and culinary arts
  • Required: Food Handlers Certificate 

SMILE (Shared Moments in a Learning Environment): Focus on supporting children and youth with special needs and/or learning disabilities

  • Looking for staff with education and experience in: social work, mental health counselling, developmental service work, personal support work

Swim N Splash: Focus on developing children’s aquatic skills through in-pool and on-deck activities

  • Looking for staff with National Lifeguard, Standard First Aid with CPR-C, and Swim Instructor (Lifesaving Society and/or Red Cross) certifications 

Excel in Math: Focus on strengthening children’s numeracy and math skills through fun activities and games

  • Looking for staff with strong knowledge of Ontario’s Elementary and Secondary Curriculum and education and/or experience in education, finance, accounting and/or mathematics 
  • Looking for staff with experience playing and coaching basketball, NCCP and Basketball Ontario Learn 2 Train & FUNdamental Training preferred

The last week of August 27th -31st is optional, however; we ask staff for at least 8 weeks’ commitment.
